Choosing Whole Grains over Refined Grains

A whole grain is a grain that consists of all of the original components that were present when it was growing in the field. Refined grains, on the other hand, have had some of the components removed to give them a better texture and a longer shelf life.

These refined grains are more commonly used and find their way into our diets more often. However, recent studies indicate that it may be best to skip refined grains altogether, in favor of the whole grain alternatives.

Parts of a Grain

Grain begins its life as the seed of a plant. It consists of an edible kernel surrounded by an inedible husk that protects it from the dangers of nature. The kernel itself is made up of three parts:

* The bran is the outer skin of the kernel. It contains lots of dietary fiber and B vitamins, as well as protein and starch.

* The germ is the part of the kernel that is the embryo of the seed. It is high in both vitamin B and vitamin E, as well as fat and protein.

* The remaining part, the endosperm, is the part of the seed that provides energy to the germ. It increases safe storage times, but has little else to offer as far as nutrition goes.

Refined Grains

When it comes to refined grains, the bran and germ have been removed mechanically. The main reason for this is so they last longer before spoiling. Neither component is especially hardy, so removing them creates a product that will stay on the shelves for much longer. Refined grains also have a finer texture, which some people find to be preferable.

Many of the health benefits of cereal grain are removed during the refining process. Without germ and bran, grains do little more for us than provide energy. Studies show that sticking with whole grains can reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

Another type of grain available on the market is enriched grain. Clean eating diets are a very popular trend these days. They focus on replacing unhealthy processed foods with fresh, whole alternatives. Processed foods have often lost much of their nutritional value in order to make them last longer or taste better. Not only that, they may also contain additives or preservatives that have a negative impact on your health with regular consumption.

Check the Labels

Some foods may say that they are “whole” on the label, but actually only be made in part with clean ingredients.

Also, make sure you pay attention to the serving size. A food’s nutrition facts may not look so bad, but “one serving” usually doesn’t include the whole product.

While there are many different ideas of what exactly encompasses clean eating, the basic principle of skipping processed foods in favor of whole, fresh ones is of great benefit to your body.

Sample Weekly Meal Plan for a Clean Eating Lifestyle

Looking for a sample meal plan to help you get started on a clean eating lifestyle? Here’s a week’s worth of great, clean meal ideas that you can try at home.

Day 1

Breakfast: Poached egg with marinara – Use homemade marinara to avoid the processed stuff in jars.

Lunch: Chicken salad and pita – Greek yogurt is used in place of mayonnaise to fit in with clean eating guidelines.  

Dinner: Black bean burgers – Use whole grain or whole wheat buns. Add a dash of cayenne for a little kick.

Day 2

Breakfast: Green protein smoothie – You can use your favorite leafy greens for this recipe. Blend in fruit for added sweetness.

Lunch: Veggie sandwich – Use whole grain or whole wheat bread and several types of veggies such as bean sprouts, tomatoes, avocados, cucumbers and your favorite type of leaf lettuce.

Here are several great ways to incorporate fresh produce into every meal of the day.

Breakfast

Many fruits are already considered to be a great addition to a complete breakfast. Orange or grapefruit juice provides a wholesome alternative to coffee and sugary sports drinks. However, keep in mind that some of these juices contain added sugars, so be sure you enjoy them in moderation.

Create a Positive From A Negative

Just now it is 02:18hrs Sat 17th Dec 2016. This year on SlimRoast Coffee has been the best year in my Diabetic life. My sugar level has been under the best control ever. Not perfect but the best it has ever been.

I had my HBA1c yesterday and the results are in. They are Excellent. Where as the previous years they were getting worse every year, last year they were at their worse, then 6 months later they had turned around and this year they are the a few points better.

I know I can do a lot more, and I will do. A Positive mind will help a Negative body.

When we moved down to the Isle of Wight, one of the MAIN Reasons was because of my health. My ACR at the time had risen and it had a lot of cause for concern. However, medication could fix it back then. I had my Diabetic review last Year (2015) and the ACR was raised, however it wasn’t an overly big concern just one that I had to be careful of. I had my bloods done last week for this Diabetic Review and my ACR has raised again.

This means for me a moderately increased risk, I think the classification is A2. I should be A1. If I go to A3 then you can probably guarantee a future expectation of Kidney Failure and Heart Attacks.

Because I am diabetic, the increased risk of Thyroid problems is one that male and females can get. I have noticed that recently I have been getting more and more tired and sleeping, where as before when I just started to take the Coffee I had so much energy, now I just seem to have none. I do keep the computer on, and I do help and support the team that I have built and the people that I help. Thats about as much as I can get done. I no longer have Monday to Sunday, I have awake and asleep. Some times I don’t even know what day it is. I can be in the kitchen doing the dishes and washing the clothes, and it’s like 04:30 hrs and I’m waking the kids up at 06:45 hrs and driving them to school. There really is no concept of time. Just that pissed off look from my wife when I haven’t been to bed, or that “Dont Touch me Look” from the kids when I have what I call an Internet Beard. You know the one, you have a shave, sit down at the computer and the next time you look up there is a darn beard there lol.

My cholesterol level is on par, it’s currently at 5.43 which is good. I don’t use conventional cooking. I have an Air Fryer, a Halogen Oven, and a Nutri Bullet that I use, I also have my slow cooker. These weren’t specifically bought because i wanted to lose weight or anything like that. I just wanted to eat healthier and get my kids in to the habit.

Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s we used Lard and Fat for everything, I didn’t want my kids to get in to that habit. I also drink, well my whole family actually, we buy on average of 100 bottles of strawberry water a week, rather than fizzy pop.  (I have been known to buy the ODD Bottle) but nothing like I used to. A few years ago I was near deaths door, my bones were sore, my muscles hurt, I was sleeping all the time, I was erratic. My mother in law sent me an email with a report about aspartame and it changed my life.

It actually took me over a month to break that addiction, but when I broke it. OH MY, I started to regain so much of my health. I learned that one woman was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and that she had heard about what aspartame was and what it did to your body. She gained control and was actually NOT MS, it was all down to the aspartame. I wonder how many more people were mis-diagnosed with that. Scarey to think.

I now try and keep my aspartame to a minimum, but they get it in everything. Infact be careful because they renamed it and are trying to make it legal again under the new name. Don’t be fooled.

My blood pressure, don’t we all hate that one. Turns out I’m at Stage 1 hypertension, I did sit down and talk about my life because I feel that your mental ability really does affect your Health and more specifically Diabetes.

I struggle like mad with Depression. I have no idea why because when I look around me, everything I ever wanted I have right here. I remember when I was a Soldier in the British Army and when we were doing Guard Duty around the Married Quarters, looking in people’s windows and seeing “Normality” and Family Life, I was jealous.

I wanted that. The wife and kids like to think I had a bit of a reputation when I was in the Army, but honestly for the most part, I was single, celebate, not always through choice. Circumstances weren’t always obvious and to be honest, my opinion of myself was very low, what could anyone see in me so opportunity that might have been there was almost always missed.

The things I got up to in the Army, back in the 90’s darn we were all a bit crazy back then. It was such a release to be around people that were as crazy as you. Yeah there were bullies, there were really hard times, there were some awesome times and lots of great memories, but we got on with it and we did what had to be done and we made the most of it. The Army really was my surrogate family and I loved that.

So I have everything that I ever wanted, but that doesn’t mean my wife and kids have what they wanted from a Husband and Dad.

The depression is a bugger, it really is. People will say, “Get Over It” and things like that but the reality is it’s not that easy is it.

So If I am so ill with my body, WHY Continue with the Valentus Products?

How to Create a Secure Password You Can Remember

It’s often very difficult to balance the needs of highly secure passwords and actually remembering them all. The passwords that are the most difficult to remember are the ones that are stronger and more secure. If it’s hard for you to remember, then it’ll be even harder for hackers to guess it.

However, since these passwords are the thing that will get you into important documents and places, you’ll need some way of remembering, and a password manager can’t always be of help. Instead, you can use your memory to help you along. Below are some tips to help you create a secure password that you can actually remember.

1. Create a long password; the longer the password, the harder it is for a hacker to hack into your accounts. Consider making it at least 12 characters long. Make sure that you avoid names, places, important dates, and dictionary words.

2. Mix it up. Use variations of capitalization, numbers, spellings and punctuation.

3. Use Bruce Schneier’s Method. This method states that you take a sentence that means something to you, or a completely random one, and abbreviate and combine the words in unique ways to form a password. For example, “There’s no place like home!” In password language, this can translate to “TNPLH!” This method allows you plenty of freedom in making a password. You don’t have to do it the way mentioned above; you can arrange the sentence into any password that makes sense to you.

4. Never reuse a password for other sites. If a hacker does eventually figure out your password to one site, he now has access to all your other accounts.

5. You don’t have to change your passwords every 90 days. Unless you feel your passwords have been compromised, changing your passwords periodically does more harm than good.

6. Beware of the “secret question”. This is the question that sometimes pops up if you have forgotten your password. You don’t want the answer to this question to be easier to guess than your actual password.

7. Choose a favorite passage out of your favorite book and use a word out of that passage. For example, if you favorite book is “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, an example of a password would be, “2WhitePetals52”. In this example the “2” symbolizes the paragraph number, “White Petals” symbolizes the group of words chosen, and “52” is the page number.

Creating a password that you can remember and a password that hackers cannot guess is hard. It seems as though hackers can get into everything despite the precautions we take. However, with harder and more complex passwords, we can help diminish the possibilities of getting hacked.

You may also notice strange windows popping up on your screen once your computer has been attacked.

4. Beware of any attachments in emails. Never open any attachments that are from unsolicited websites. This is where many scammers will lure you into giving out your information freely. Some of these attachments may even harm your computer. Trust your gut when looking at an email. If you don’t recognize the sender, don’t open the attachments.

5. Only donate through websites that are secure. To tell whether or not a website is secure, look for “https” rather than “http” in the URL address line. You should also look for the “padlock” symbol on your browser’s status bar. This will let you know if the website is safe or not.

6. Protect your confidential information. Do not click on any links asking for your personal information like passwords, bank account numbers, or credit card numbers. This is known as phishing, and you don’t ever want to fall victim to this crime.

It’s very unfortunate that people feel the need to make fake charity accounts just so they can make some money. However, it’s just the type of world we live in. We must adapt to these unfortunate events and do everything we can to prevent ourselves from falling victim to these despicable people.
